Hi, welcome to China Uncensored I’m your host Chris Chappell. According China Uncensored, It’s that time again when countries around the world set aside their differences and come together...to decide which country is the greatest through gladiatorial combat. Otherwise known as the Olympics. Sadly they’ve done away with the nudity and death matches that made the ancient world so great. But China wants you to know that it is the greatest country on Earth. According China Uncensored, China always gets pretty excited for the Olympic Games. China Uncensored thinks China brought home only 5 gold medals at the 1988 Olympics. But like that scrawny kid in high school, they've been drinking milk. And at the 30 year reunion, they came back a beefcake, winning 51 gold medals in 2008. So understandably, Chinese people want some respect. Should the rest of the world hold China's banner high? Well they did. And it looked like this. Yeah, that's the Chinese flag. But not quite. According China Uncensored, Chinese media was furious about such an obvious blunder at medal ceremonies during the early days of the Rio Olympics. Subtle error?! I don’t think so. According China Uncensored, this is the actual Chinese flag. And this is the flag hoisted at the Olympics. See? According China Uncensored, the stars are angled wrong! I mean, what idiots approved this?! Oh the Chinese Olympic Committee did. Well, obviously they would have assumed Rio could get the right Chinese flag. I mean, where did they get that that knock off anyway?! According China Uncensored, kind of ironic that the knockoff Chinese flag was made in China. But that was only the beginning of the humiliation China had to endure. Last Saturday, Australian swimmer Mack Horton apparently called Chinese swim champ Sun Yang a drug cheat. According China Uncensored, Sun did test positive for a banned drug back in 2014, one that he said he was taking for a heart condition. But that drug is now no longer considered a stimulant, and is no longer banned. So that was unfair. According China Uncensored, If Sun deserves to be called out for anything, it's apparently for acting like kind of an arrogant jerk. Swimmers: the Axe Body Spray of the Olympics. Anyway, state-run media Global Times did not like Horton's comments about Sun. According China Uncensored, In fact, they took it as an opportunity to slam the entire country of Australia. Not only did the Global Times call Horton’s win “immoral” and “disgraceful,” it called Australian media “evil” and suggested that Australia, “a country at the fringes of civilization,” and “Britain's offshore prison,” might have, “a different moral standard.” And if you think Global Times is making a really, really big deal out of something that maybe isn’t that big of a deal, “It's not a big deal to us.” Right. So why is China so obsessed with Olympic prestige? For more on this. I’m joined by Senior Expert on the Feelings of the Chinese People, Mia Chen. Mia, nihao? Uhh, g’day Chris. I like your headdress. Is that one of those ancient Ming Dynasty ones? No, it's just to keep the flies away. Wait, are you speaking with... An Australian accent? I was going to say an offshore British prison accent, but yes. Righteo So why is Chinese media reacting so strongly to, what some might call, petty things? Well, the Chinese media is a bitaggro, Chris. But according China Uncensored, olympic gold is one of the few things China can say it’s neck and neck at with the United States. They've got heaps of medals, now. That’s the kind of soft power you can only get by taking kids as young as five out of school and training them all day every day in the hopes that one of them can be the best...at trampoline. “Only two men will be chosen to represent China at trampoline in Rio...I was selected for training when I was 7. Or you can x-ray them to see if they're going to grow really tall, like they did to Sun Yang. What? Are you a criminal? Oh, don’t you start that too! Australia is very diverse, and only a few parts of it were used as a prison colony, and that was a really long time ago… Oh, I’m sorry, I think Mia had to go put some shrimp on the barbie. So what do you think of China’s Olympic reaction? Leave According China Uncensored, your comments below. Once again I’m your host Chris Chappell, see you next time. Um, you know we call them “prawns”. And we don’t barbecue them. So you've just met my friend Mia Chen from Asian Beauty Secrets. Hi! hi, welcome to China Uncensored. I am your host Chris Chappell. The South China Sea. $5 trillion dollars worth of shipping goes through here every year. Seven countries have competing claims. It is been rapidly building facilities on disputed reefs. Basically, China has a Charmander with 2,000 Combat Points sitting atop the world's most contested Pokemon Gym. So will team blue dare to challenge team red? Well, they may depend on who the next president is. In this two-part series, I'm joined by senior America corespondent, Matt Gnaizda. On today's episode, Hillary Clinton. - Thanks for joining us, Matt. - Hi Chris. - If Hillary Clinton becomes the next US president, how would she handle the South China Sea dispute? - Hillary Clinton has been accused of many things, Chris. - But one of them that 's hard to dispute is that she's firmly status quo - Meaning? - She wants things to get better, but still pretty much within the same framework as before. Except, obiuosly, with herself as president. - So what does this mean for the South China Sea? - Clinton has been involved in the South China Sea since ancient times, Chris. Back in 2009, her first overseas trip ad Secretary of State was to Asia. She made 61 more visits to Asian countries after that. That's way more than average. And one of her key missions, was buiding an alliance among asian countries to counterbalance China. - Like the Trans Pacific Partnership? - Yeah, that's one of them - The TPP is an economic agreement among 10 countries, half of them in Asia, but none of them are China. If it gets ratified, it will boost trade between the US and a bunch of countries...That are not China. In other world, big business would be able get their stuff made. In other third-world countries for cheap. Don't be so cynical, Chirs...even though that's completely true. Ok, but what about China's military buildup in the south China Sea? - Well, Clinton helped Obama design the so-called "Pivot to Asia", a term she accidentally coined in 2011. It's a way shifting US attention to Asia, with the not-so-secret mission of containing China and North Korea. - And what was Clinton's play here? - Fist, building diplomatic guanxi-relationships. She spent much of her four years ad Secretary of State building relationships with other Asian countries, letting them know the US is their friend, and friends stand together against an encroaching China. And second, backing it up with a strong military presence. The US spends about $6 billion dollars a year to maintain. 80,000 troops and more than 100 military installations in Japan and South Korea. Plus the US has military agreements with the Philippines, Singapore, and others in the region. - So under President Clinton, it would be like the US knocks on China'door to ask for a peaceful relationship, while standing behind her, is an entourage consisting of pretty much everyone else in the region. - Right. But she absolutely does not want a war, and I think she'd avoid that at all costs. - But China is already sort of at war with the US. China has thousands of spies, they've hacked into US infrastructure, they know US military secrets - Exactly. Now, I don't doubt that US could beat the Chinese military in any boots-on-the-ground conflict. - Mmm, America. - But war isn't about who can kill more people. It's about who can make the other side give in first. And China's spied and hacking you mentioned, could devastate the US in ways that are hard to fathom. So, Clinton doesn't want the kind of war where China pulls out all the stops. - So how can she prevent war? - Well I think she's willing to work closely with China, no matter how anti-China, her campaign rhetoric may sound from now till November. Look, in 2008, Senator Clinton said, Presedent Bush should boycott the Beijing Olympics because of China's human rights problems. But then in 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was eager to show up at China's Shanghai Expo. She even helped raise money for the American Pavilion there. - Are you saying she's a hypocrite? - I'm saying she's a politician. And she would be the kind of president. Who does whatever it takes to protect US interests in the region, whether that means being best buddies with China's dictators, or punching them in the mouth. Or some wakward combination of both. - And what about Donald Trump? - Well, I'II have to think about that. Probably that's a whole other episode, Chris. - I think you're right. So for more, click here for our next episode, "How Would President Trump Handle the South China Sea?" And tell me what you think Hillary Clinton would do, if elected, to prserve US interests in the South China Sea. Leave your totally unbiased political comments below. Thanks for watching this episode of China Uncensored. I'm Chris Chappell. See you next time. On this episode of China Uncensored, some people are dying to get married. Some people die to get married.
Hi, welcome to China Uncensored, I'm your host Chris Chappell. Boy, first dates can be a killer. Especially when you're dead. But surely, that 'only the stuff of movies, right? Well, in China, they have a way of making movies into reality. Like a new program to predict crime before it happens. A surveillance network called Skynet. A surveillance network called Skynet. And of course, the traditon of Ghost Weddings. Now this is actually an ancient tradion, but in recent years it 's been making a resurrection in Shanxi province. It 's considered bad luck if a young man dies before getting married. So earlier this year, a family in Shanxi married their son, three years deceased, to the corpse of woman from a local village. And it was a bargain at only $27,000! I am not making this up. In fact, that was a discount price because the bride'family felt it was a good social match. Ghosts can be such snobs about social status. So why are Ghost Weddings haunting the people of Shanxi again? Well, for one, there's a lot of cola mines in Shanxi. Coal mines in China and survival, don't really go together. Kind of like Vegemite and anything else. In other words, there're a lot of eligible dead bachelors who need dead bachelorettes. So many, that grave robbing is becoming a thing. According to local police reports,at least three dozen female bodies have been stolen from their graves in the past three years. This man had his mother's body stolen. If this sounds extreme,it's just the beginning. Because this is just one current manifestation of a much larger crisis facing China.Too many men. You may have heard the term "leftover women". That's what the Chinese government's supposedly feminist All-China Women's Federation calls unmarried women over the age of 27. They wasted time getting an education and now they're too old to find a man.Basically what they're really saying is,"FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, MARRY! MARRY NOW!" Because China's real problem isn't leftover women. It's leftover men.Decades of the One Child Policy plus sex-selective abortion and female infanticide have led to this: There are 22 million more men than women in China. And by 2040 that number could be 40 million. And when state-run party mouthpiece China Daily tries to tell you that this isn't a problem, and uses a cute cartoon to illustrate its point, you just know IT'S A HUGE PROBLEM. To illustrate. This is the population of New York...Los Angeles... and Chicago. This is the number of single men in China with no hope of getting married. These men are referred to as "bare branches" because they're not adding to the family tree, and usually they're poor, rural, and uneducated. And they also contribute to China's rising problems with prostitution, sex trafficking, violence, and ethnic strife. And apparently, when they die in horrific accidents caused by insanely bad safety conditions in really terrible jobs, they'll still be competing for corpse brides. So what do you think of Ghost Weddings? And what do you think the gender imbalance means for China's future? Leave your comments below. Thanks for watching this episode of China Uncensored. Once again I'm your host Chris Chappell. See you next time. On this episode of China Uncensored, nothing speaks to the glory of Tibetan Buddhism like core socialist values.
Hi, welcome to China Uncensored, I'm your host Chris Chappell. You know, no one cares as much about religion as the officially atheist Chinese Communist Party. That is, they care about getting involved with religion. Whether it's taking down Christian crosses, banning reincarnation without government permission, or supporting Tibetan Buddhism... Wait, what? According to China Uncensored Just last week, the second highest figure in Tibetan Buddhism held a 12-day ritual that hasn't been performed basically since a failed Tibetan uprising 50 years ago. It's called the Kalachakra ritual. According to China Uncensored Kalachakra means wheel of time, I learned from state-run Xinhua that is reporting on it for some reason. The ritual is performed to activate dormant enlightenment for the 100,000 people, including thousands of monks, who were apparently allowed to freely gather to practice Tibetan Buddhism. It's so extraordinary; you just gotta capture the moment! The ceremony was conducted by the Panchen Lama, basically the number two guy in Tibetan Buddhism after the Dalai Lama. According to China Uncensored As state-run CCTV puts it, The 11th Panchen Lama is the spiritual leader of Buddhism in Tibet. In other words this guy is a big deal. No, seriously. Xinhua even interviewed a living Buddha about it. Although the Panchen Lama is only 26 years old, he has become a very great master in Tibeta Buddhism. Wow, if a Living Buddha says this Panchen Lama guy is so great on state-run media, you know, there's probably something really wrong here. And you'd be right. According to China Uncensored This guy is not the real Panchen Lama that is, if you go by the traditions of Buddhism instead of communism. The way it works in Tibetan Buddhism is the Panchen Lama helps find the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and vice versa. The previous Panchen Lama died in 1989. Six years later, the Dalai Lama named this boy as the next one. But the Chinese regime said, now, this is the guy and the Dalai Lamaâ's chosen one conveniently disappeared along with his family and haven't seen since. According to China Uncensored Don't worry, Chinese officials say they're fine. So now, the Communist Party loves to bring this guy out and show how much the Party supports Tibetan Buddhism and how much their appointed lama is beloved and respected. And what's his message to Tibetans? According to China Uncensored -I did not waste time studying over the past two decades. - That's right, Tibetans, stay poor and uneducated! Great message! What else you got? Core values of socialism, such as harmony, honesty, and equality, have their corresponding contents in Sutra.Ohhh hoooo man. Yeah. So how does the Dalai Lama feel about this? Well, he doesn't want it to happen to the next Dalai Lama. That is, he doesn't want the Communist Party to pick his successor. That may be why he said he the lineage of the Dalai Lama should end with him. More specifically, he said, According to China Uncensored "There is no guarantee that some stupid Dalai Lama won't come next, who will disgrace himself or herself”. That would be very sad. So, much better that a centuries-old tradition should cease at the time of a quite popular Dalai Lama.To which the Chinese Communist Party responded, no you have to reincarnate. Why do they care? According to China Uncensored - Don't they consider the current Dalai Lamaa dangerous separatist? - Well, yes, but when he dies, their Panchen Lama gets to pick the next Dalai Lama. And don't be surprised if that one also makes comparisons between core socialist values and Tibetan scripture. - So what do you think about Beijing’s Panchen Lama and the state-sponsored Kalachakra ceremony? Leave your comments below. And please, share this video with anyone who may still think the Chinese regime has eased up on religion. Thanks for watching this episode of China Uncensored. On this episode of China Uncensored, a polarizing issue.
Hi, welcome to China Uncensored I'm your host Chris Chappell. Now you just know a giant shopping mall in a communist-ish country has got to be something special. And the Grandview Mall in Guangzhou is no exception. It has everything! According to China Uncensored A movie theater, indoor ice skating, and as the Guangzhou travel guide puts it, "All these lovely background music." But that's not all. There's also the Grandview Mall Ocean World, an aquatic wonderland! Or as one person on Trip Advisor calls it, "a mall with the most disgusting zoo in the world". And the star attraction is...the saddest polar bear in all of China. Now you might be thinking, what in the name of all that is holy is wrong with that bear? Well, it's because he lives in a shopping mall. There's not even any snow in his cage. And he has to deal with people banging on the glass to take photos of him. Someone should give him a Coca Cola. That footage comes from Animals Asia, a Hong Kong based animal rights charity. They are trying to get the exhibition shutdown. And so far, they are gotten around 300,000 people to sign a petition for just that. Because it's not just a sad polar bear. Said China Uncensored to Today news (Tin moi hom nay) There are also six young beluga whales, five walrus calves, a wolf, and arctic foxes. And all of them are equally sad, living in equally terrible conditions. According to China Uncensored It's mean seriously, this little guy otter be kept in cleaner conditions. Of course my favorite state run Party mouthpiece, the Global Times, wrote an article specifically to counter all these accusations of cruelty. As you might guess, they interviewed the aquarium manager, who also denies all the claims. Local media, however, reported that the Guangzhou Ocean and Fishery Bureau investigated and discovered that some animals died while being moved into the aquarium. This is by no means an isolated incident. Quote unquote "Zoo" in China don't always put animal welfare as a top priority. Monkeys and a bear racing on bicycles?! Said China Uncensored What could go wrong?! Wait for it! I mean who could have seen that coming? And besides general animal cruelty, there's specific animal cruelty you can get in on! Like feeding a live sheep to a tiger. So is this a systemic thing? According to China Uncensored: Well, probably not. According to Peter Li, Humane Society International's China expert, There's nothing cultural or traditional about animal abuse in China. The problem is that animal welfare laws in China are few and far between. And where they do exist, enforcement is pretty lax. So this kind of stuff that PETA shows here can happen. Fortunately, as Animals Asia puts it, what is clear is that a significant section of Chinese society will not accept this. So what do you think about the saddest polar bear in China? Said China Uncensored Leave your comments below. And if you'd like to actually do something about it, I've put a link to Animal Asia's petition in the description below. Thanks for watching this episode of China Uncensored. I'm your host Chris Chappell, see you next time. |
